October 5-7, 2018 Florida Trail Association Annual Conference.  Wayne G. Sanborn Activity Center in Earl Brown Park Deland, FL  Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the National Trails System  FREE EVENT  Learn about America’s important trails and opportunities to enjoy, traverse and volunteer on them. Check out various presentations, demos and displays; and meet a variety of outdoor leaders.  Hear from compelling guests, including: our Friday evening speaker, outdoor diversity advocate and author, Audrey Peterman and on Saturday night, well-known speed-hiker and author, Jennifer Pharr Davis.

Other exciting guests from the outdoor community will also be present Sandra Friend and John Keatley's official book launch and book signing for the new, full-color Third Edition of 50 Hikes in Central Florida.   Attend an FNST Coalition Meeting (Sat., Oct. 6, 9 - 11:30am)  Live music and exciting gear raffle. Register for this event on the Florida Trail Website!

October 12-14 Florida Trail Association Work Crew Event- Seminole State Forest  Trail Re-route.  Register on the FTA Web Site for this special event for free camping and meals and further information. Our Highlanders Chapter is sponsoring this event which will be led by Kelly Weiner, Regional Program Director. We will need volunteers to support the Event for set up, cooking, clean up, transport, etc.

Chapter members not camping can come on Saturday and/or Sunday as for a regular Chapter work hike.  Meet in Cassia at the Brantley Branch Road entrance before 9 AM. Please be on time as we will be shuttling to another area to work.  Please bring insect spray, hats, lunch, etc. and lots of water (must carry 2 qts water). Tuesday October 16, 2018  Highlanders Chapter General Meeting:  NOTE:  DAY AND DATE CHANGE:  We are meeting on Tuesday due to the conflicts with the library schedule.    We meet at the Leesburg Public Library 100 East Main Street in the meeting rooms at the front of the library.  Meeting starts at 6:00 PM. Wednesday October 17, 2018  Weeding day at Memorial site for Highlanders Chapter at PEAR Park 8AM.  Directions to Pear Park:  Take Routes 27/441 South towards Leesburg.  When 27 and 441 split stay to right and go straight ahead staying on route 27.  About 5 miles south of Leesburg at the junction of Route 48 and 27 proceed straight ahead on route 27 for 1.8 miles.  Turn right onto University Ave. Follow about a mile to entrance into PEAR Park.   Park and meet at Nature Center Building with the nature painting on it.  IMPORTANT:   You will pass a PEAR Park entrance on Route 27 1 mile South of the junction of 27 and 48. Meet before 9:00 AM in the parking lot on the west side of Highway 19 that is 2 1/2 miles north of the turn off to Alexander Springs (Highway 445). Tuesday October 30, 2018  Bike trip on Tuesday October 30th Withlacoochee State Trail at Ridge Manor  We will bike 9 miles from Ridge Manor Trailhead to Nobleton (18 miles roundtrip). We will meet at the Ridge Manor Trailhead off  Hwy 50 on Croom Rital Rd at 9:30am. Wear helmet and bring water and lunch. Lunch will be at Lake Townsen Park in Nobleton. Restrooms at both ends. Take Hwy 50 west to traffic light at Croom Rital road. Light is right after you pass under the bridge for trail over the highway. Saturday November 24, 2018  Hike Cross Florida Greenway:  49th Ave Trailhead to Ross Prairie Trailhead We will shuttle cars from Ross Prairie to 49th Ave. We will then hike 7 miles back to Ross Prairie along the Florida National Scenic Trail.. Bring a snack, lunch, water and a plastic bag to sit on in your day pack. We will meet at the Ross Prairie Trailhead on RT 200 at 8:30 am. Thursday December 6, 2018  Hike and Bike -- Ridge Manor to Silver Lake Recreation Area   We will meet at 8:45 at the Ridge Manor parking lot for the Withlacoochee State Bike trail just off Hwy 50 on Croom Rital Rd. We will shuttle our bikes to the  Crooked River Campground within the Silver Lake Recreation Complex.. The bikes will be left there (bring locks) and we will return to the Ridge Manor to begin our 5.2 mile hike along the River Trail. When we get to our bikes we will ride 1.5 miles to our lunch spot on Silver Lake. (hard pack road) After lunch we will ride our bikes back to the cars on the Withlacoochee Bike Trail (paved, 5 miles). Lunch can be carried or left in your bike bags. For those who do not want to bike we could shuttle your car to Silver Lake. The park has a $2/person fee.
